In April 2023, Stephen and Carol Baxter were found dead in their armchairs at their home in West Mersea, Essex, by their daughter Ellena. With no sign of a break-in, no obvious clue about cause of death and no murder weapon, the police were baffled.

But what transpired was a twisted case of control, fraud and, ultimately, murder - all committed by IT worker Luke D'Wit, a man the couple treated like a surrogate son.

'Luke was like a brother to me, says Ellena. 'I couldn't believe how he could do anything bad. It was so unlike the Luke I knew. I just couldn't piece it together.
