When Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt’s daughter Lyla, 5, recently fell off a horse, the accident sparked a vivid childhood memory for the mom and became a pivotal teachable moment for her oldest child. “She was really upset about it,” says the author and podcast host, 35, who shares two other kids with her husband, actor Chris Pratt, 46. “It was scary for her, but we got her back on.”

The same thing happened to Schwarzenegger Pratt when she was a child, and now she’s sharing the lesson learned beyond her own household. In her new children’s book Kat and Brandy, out Nov. 4, she writes about the experience and how she was able to gain the confidence to get back in the saddle, thanks to the special bond she developed with a white rescue pony named Brandy. “She really helped me overcome fears and tap into my inner bravery and courage,” she says. “My goal for this book is for kids to feel seen in their fears and encouraged to overcome them.”
