Johnny Depp & Amber Heard: One Year After the Trial
Each night when Johnny Depp performs with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry on tour with their band Hollywood Vampires, he commands the stage with the charisma of a man who's both a rock star and a movie star. And he does it all with a medical boot on his left foot, which he's sported since he fractured his ankle in May. At the June 25 show at Le Zenith in Paris, the 60-year-old, who had decorated his cast with fluorescent tape, hobbled a bit but worked the stage while trading guitar licks and belting songs like David Bowie's "Heroes" to the crowd of 6,000 adoring fans. Said one concertgoer, Phoebe, 19: "I didn't know he made such good music!"
Two days earlier and about 1,000 miles away in Sicily, his ex-wife Amber Heard also kept her stride. At the Taormina Film Festival, where she was promoting her first movie in two years, the actress, 37, nearly lost a shoe while navigating the ancient cobblestones in front of the Teatro Antico, where the opening-night festivities were taking place. But she quickly recovered and appeared very happy to be celebrating her film, the thriller In the Fire. "It's a beautiful movie about the almost supernatural effect and force of love," Heard told People at the fest. "I don't want to sound cheesy about it, but it's a movie about love."
In more ways than one, both Depp and Heard are finding their footing. It's been one year since the conclusion of their bruising six-week defamation trial, which exposed shocking details of their tempestuous five-year relationship and threatened to end their careers. Among the more disturbing allegations made by the exes (who met on the set of the 2011 movie The Rum Diary): She accused him of sexually assaulting her while he was on a drunken bender; he testified that she once defecated in their bed after an argument (claims Depp and Heard each adamantly denied).
