Brad Pitt has wanted to put the pedal to the met-al on the big screen for about as long as he's been acting. “I've been trying to get in, do a racing film, for literally decades,” he recently told reporters. “And whether it was on bikes or whether it was in cars, for whatever reason, it just didn't pan out.”

Until now. Pitt, 61, stars in director Joseph Kosinski's F1 The Movie, an ambitious drama set in the high-stakes world of Formula 1 race car driving, an elite team sport where the costs of the cars and the speeds they reach are both exceptionally high. To make the project that he calls “the most authen-tic racing film that's ever been done,” Kosinski enlisted seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, 40, who signed on as a producer and appears in the film as himself in a brief cameo. “I had to talk him into it,” Kosinski says.
