November - December 2025

Banu Mushtaq achieved one of the most significant milestones for regional Indian literature when her short-story collection Heart Lamp: Selected Stories won the International Booker Prize in May 2025. She became the first author writing in Kannada to receive the award, and the first to do so for a short-story collection.

BANU MUSHTAQ

Born in 1948 in Hassan, Karnataka, Banu trained and worked as a lawyer while writing in the protest-literature tradition of the Bandaya Sahitya movement. Her stories span the lives of Muslim and Dalit women in southern India, exploring faith, caste, gender, and resistance with empathy and sharp insight.
