Was Churchill really the first to use the phrase 'Iron Curtain'?
-
"Iron curtain: a state of rigid censorship and secrecy (coined by Winston Churchill in 1946 to describe the line of demarcation between western Europe and the Soviet zone of influence)". This was the definition included in the American College Dictionary. But the editors remained uncertain - had Churchill genuinely originated the term? In 1951, a member of that publication's team wrote to him to find out.
There were good reasons for wondering.
