Wake-up receivers allow battery-powered IoT devices to conserve battery life by remaining in a standby state until needed. In this article, Abel discusses the importance of wake-up receivers for achieving low energy consumption, and describes how he built a demonstration prototype with an integrated RFicient wake-up receiver on the PCB.

Wake-Up Receivers Extending Operational Periods in Battery-Powered Applications

Power consumption is a crucial criterion for the Internet of Things (IoT). Ongoing wireless connectivity uses a considerable amount of battery power, which usually restricts the operational lifespan of wireless sensor nodes. The wake-up receiver creates new opportunities by allowing continuous access to data and real-time information with low latency and minimal power usage.

In this article I write about wake-up receivers. I provide an overview of the current state of the art in wake-up receivers, and also explore several use cases that have the potential to be developed into fully integrated solutions. I then show you how to integrate and develop a solution around a wake-up receiver.

OK, let's explore the world of wake-up receivers!

ADDRESSING KEY IOT CHALLENGES WITH A WAKE-UP RECEIVER

Continuous monitoring of a wireless channel is critical for applications where the exact timing of an incoming radio message is unknown to the receiver. Once a radio request has been received, a rapid response is expected. The wake-up receiver plays a key role in unlocking the full potential of the IoT.

Many IoT applications demand a delicate balance between ultra-low power consumption and the ability to “wake up” the device upon receiving a radio message. Traditional solutions typically rely on periodically waking up the receiver to detect specific messages, which still leads to significant power consumption on both the transmitter and receiver sides. This ongoing power drain can limit the scalability and effectiveness of IoT systems, especially in scenarios where devices are expected to remain in low-power states for extended periods.

STMicroelectronics' New Automotive Linear Voltage Regulator Preserves Battery Energy in Challenging Conditions

The TL99VR03 300mA low-dropout (LDO) regulator provides resilient and efficient power, with a wide input-voltage range and very low quiescent current consumption, only 3.5µA at no load. The IC has an enable pin for turning the regulator off, which reduces the idle current to 800nA, and integrates soft-start circuitry to limit current during power-up and fault recovery.
