The Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan marks a proud new era of education and historical conservation for the country

Guardians of heritage

At the crossroads of ancient history and the modern era, capital city Tashkent, has completed a venture that already ranks amongst the most ambitious cultural initiatives of New Uzbekistan.

More than a museum complex, the Islamic Civilization Center is an educational and cultural megaproject dedicated to understanding the role of Islamic heritage in world history, studying and preserving the country's cultural legacy, and integrating these learnings into the future.

First envisioned in 2017 by Uzbekistan's President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, it represents a new cultural and educational code not only for the country but far beyond Central Asia.

Khaled El-Anany, UNESCO Director-General, said "I wish this radiant Center becomes a beacon for the entire world. It is a true testament to cultural diversity, tolerance, openness, and Uzbekistan's role in the development of humanity - a real crossroads of civilizations!"

ARCHITECTURE IMBUED WITH SYMBOLS

The complex's 65-metre dome and four monumental portals symbolise the unity of the country's regions. At the heart of the complex lies the Hall of the Holy Qur'an, where the 7th-century Mushaf of Uthman - inscribed by UNESCO in the Memory of the World register - is kept.
