The plot was clever and original – and the end result was magic. To this day, 40 years on, Back to the Future remains one of the most beloved teen movies of all time. Set in 1985, it follows Marty McFly, who's sent back to 1955 via a time-travelling DeLorean car built by his eccentric friend Emmett “Doc” Brown. Marty's entire existence is thrown into danger when he inadvertently prevents his teenage mum and dad from falling in love. So, posing as one of their high-school classmates, he tries to bring his parents together and get back to his future.
