The "Turn Back Time" singer's mom, Jackie Jean Sarkisian, was just 19 and had been married to Cher's dad for only three months when she discovered she was pregnant. Pressured by her own mother to terminate the pregnancy, Jackie went to have the procedure (illegal at the time) but changed her mind at the last minute. "It was her body, her life, and her choice to make," Cher writes. "Thank God she got off that table, though, or I wouldn't be here to write these pages." When Cher was a newborn, her father put her in an orphanage until Jackie could afford to regain custody. "My mom said when I went in I wasn't walking, and when I came out, I was walking but holding on," she told Today.

A teen Cher met the Splendor in the Grass actor when he almost crashed his car into hers on Sunset Boulevard. After cursing him out, she agreed to a date at his home. "He was unbelievably handsome, with one of the sexiest smiles I'd ever seen," she writes. Back at his Beverly Hills mansion, they swam in his pool and made out -despite their 10-year age difference (he was 25). "He showed me inside, fixed us some cheese and crackers, then leaned in and kissed me. 'Now, this is interesting,' I thought as I kissed him back." (They went on two more dates.)
