Developed by University of Chicago researchers, the small — four inches by eight inches — portable device, nicknamed ABLE, can collect and detect airborne molecules, and has the potential to revolutionize many areas of medicine and public health.

The multipart system has a pump to suck in the air, a humidifier that adds water vapor to it and a mini cooling system that lowers the temperature. This causes the air to condense into droplets, so particles are suspended inside.
