The Royal Family come together to enjoy festivities every December – and their celebrations are steeped in tradition
-
THE KING'S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
One of the most anticipated moments of Dec. 25, the monarch's festive broadcast has been a cherished tradition since George V delivered the first royal Christmas message over the radio in 1932. Today, millions tune in around the world to hear the sovereign reflect on the year gone by and share a message of hope and unity.
King Charles has continued the custom with his own thoughtful touches. True to his environmental values, he chooses natural, understated décor (last year, he stood next to a living Christmas tree adorned with sustainable ornaments) and occasionally records his message outside Buckingham Palace – one of only a handful of monarchs to do so.
THE CHRISTMAS DAY SERVICE AT SANDRINGHAM
For decades, the Royal Family have begun Dec. 25 by attending the morning service at St. Mary Magdalene Church on Sandringham Estate.
Prince William has spoken fondly of the tradition, recalling accompanying his family as a child and struggling to keep up with his grandfather Prince Philip on the way to church. “He used to walk so fast that there'd be huge gaps and spaces between all of us walking down, and there'd be us at the back with little legs trying to keep up,” he said.
Once inside, the family sit facing one another - something William remembers as a test of composure. “Growing up, having my cousins [seated] opposite me has always been quite difficult to keep a straight face. I've had the giggles many times in the service. Luckily, no one's filming it, so you can get away with it. And on Christmas Day, it’s fun to have a giggle and enjoy yourself.”
