It goes without saying that he was a giant,” director Martin Scorsese recalled of rock ’n’ roll legend Robbie Robertson. “There’s never enough time with anyone you love. And I loved Robbie.”

The Hollywood filmmaker was just one of many famous friends paying tribute to the Toronto-born singer, guitarist and songwriter, who died on Aug. 9 at age 80 after a private year-long battle with prostate cancer. “Canada has lost an icon,” Kiefer Sutherland posted on Twitter, while Joni Mitchell mourned “a cherished collaborator.”

The Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood remembered: “a lovely man, a great friend [who] will be dearly missed.” And, recognizing his “outsized contribution to the arts,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote, “Thank you for the music and the memories, Robbie.”
