The Prince of Wales led mourners last week as 1966 World Cup winning hero Sir Bobby Charlton made his last poignant journey past his beloved Manchester United.

Thousands of well-wishers lined the streets and members of the club’s youth teams formed a guard of honour as his funeral cortege made its way past Old Trafford, where the “holy trinity” statue depicting Sir Bobby with fellow United greats Denis Law and George Best was surrounded by floral tributes, and a red, white and black scarf was draped around Sir Bobby’s neck.

Prince William, attending the Manchester Cathedral service as the Football Association president, was joined by players past and present to pay respects to one of England’s greatest ever footballers – and one of the last surviving members of the 1966 World Cup-winning squad.
