How Louis Vuitton's olfactive ode to the sun has got us all California dreaming

Ballads have been dedicated to it and poems penned in its honour: there’s just something about the Californian sun that has seeped into our collective psyches.

Nowhere else in the world has daylight been quite so rhapsodised. Los Angeles may be the city of lights but it’s not the flicker of neon, the flare of klieg lights or the dazzle of mirror bulbs that has us hankering after the Golden State. It’s the sun - that Goldilocks alchemy of nature that’s neither too hot nor too cool. Even the smog lends a flattering sepia-toned filter.

It’s this serendipitous synchronism of light that inspired master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud to compose Sun Song, a solar scent in ode to Californian summers. His 2019 olfactive hit is being brought back to join his existing quintet of cologne perfumes for Louis Vuitton, all of which are dedicated to the state.
