In the years that followed, she'd win a wide variety of roles, but never defined herself as a star. "I said to Shirley MacLaine, 'I don't know how you do it.' And she said, 'You just have to have an image!' I never did find [it]." But the self-proclaimed "character actress" did find lasting love with Paul Newman, her husband of 50 years. And even with Paul's passing in '08 and her diagnosis of Alzheimer's, Joanne, who turns 95 on Feb. 27, remained steadfast. "Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."

She'd win an Oscar for her third film, The Three Faces of Eve. And while it was something Joanne had "been daydreaming about since I was nine years old," it came with some regrets. "What it did was give me this terrible burden," she said. "Everything else that I did had to be of that caliber."
