This heartfelt book challenges us to re-evaluate what it means to win, lose, and forgive as it masterfully depicts all the complexities of everyday life and examines issues of friendship, loyalty, loss, and identity. Backman informs the reader repeatedly how deeply in love his characters are with one another, but their capacity to show that love fluctuates in accordance with the needs of the convoluted plot. He seeks to convince readers that his characters are multifaceted as a result, but in reality, it just converts them into pawns. Backman carefully sheds light on the interconnected lives of a dozen village residents.
