A One-Two Punch for Early-Season Threats

Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) and Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) are tremendous challenges for soybean growers, robbing fields of yield potential throughout the growing season.

A One-Two Punch for Early-Season Threats

The data bears it out.

It’s estimated that SCN causes more than $1 billion in revenue loss annually to soybean yields.¹ More than 100 million bushels are estimated to be lost to the pest annually, more than seedling diseases, SDS and white mold combined.²

Once the SDS fungal pathogen is in a field, it’s there forever. If the disease appears early in the growing season, significant losses can occur. SDS thrives in a cool, wet growing season and can be more severe in fields with SCN pressure.

With all that risk, it’s vital to have a thorough plan in place, says Jeremiah Mullock, seed treatment product manager with BASF Agricultural Solutions. “All your management for SCN and SDS occurs before putting that seed in the ground. This includes knowing each field’s pressure levels, choosing soybean varieties that have the best disease tolerance packages and incorporating seed treatments to protect your soybean seed investment.”
