COLD CHAIN: THE WEAKEST LINK IN SUPPLY CHAIN?

India's cold chain logistics market is set to reach USD 30.98 billion by 2030, yet 40% food loss and pharma excursions persist.

COLD CHAIN: THE WEAKEST LINK IN SUPPLY CHAIN?

In the heart of India’s vibrant agricultural and pharmaceutical landscapes, cold chain logistics stands as the unsung guardian of perishable treasures.

Defined as the end-to-end temperature-controlled supply chain essential for safely storing, handling, and transporting sensitive goods—from lifesaving vaccines and biologics to fresh fruits, dairy, meat, seafood, and even specialised chemicals—cold chain logistics is more than a logistical necessity; it’s a lifeline.

A momentary lapse in temperature control can cascade into catastrophic spoilage, rendering millions in investments worthless and posing severe public health risks. Imagine a consignment of vaccines arriving at a rural clinic, only to find the potency compromised due to a faulty reefer truck en route. Such scenarios, unfortunately, are not rare in India.

As of December 2025, India’s cold chain logistics market is poised for explosive growth, valued at approximately USD 23.28 billion this year and projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.88 per cent to reach USD 30.98 billion by 2030. This surge is fuelled by multifaceted drivers: the relentless rise in demand for fresh produce amid urbanisation, the e-commerce boom delivering perishables to doorsteps, and the pharmaceutical sector’s ascent, with India’s pharma exports alone surpassing USD 25 billion annually.

Yet, beneath this optimism lies a stark reality—India loses nearly 40 per cent of its total food production to inadequate storage and refrigeration systems, translating to an staggering annual wastage of over Rs 89,000 crore (approximately USD 10.6 billion). Of this, more than Rs 1,400 crore stem directly from insufficient cold storage and disorganized transportation networks. Fruits and vegetables, the backbone of India’s agrarian economy, suffer a particularly harsh fate, with up to 30 per cent discarded post-harvest due to lapses in temperature-managed transit.
