A coaching mindset

When under pressure, great leadership begins not with control, but with clarity, presence and human connection.
When we talk about pressure in leadership, we tend to look first to external forces.
The demands of the market, the expectations of stakeholders and the constant drive for growth all create a very real sense of intensity. But pressure does not just come from the outside. It is also something we create for ourselves. I see it in the leaders I work with, and I recognise it in myself. A quiet but persistent expectation to perform, to have the answers and to handle every situation well, particularly when the stakes are high.
The challenge with pressure is that it rarely brings out our best thinking. Instead, it can pull us in the opposite direction. We over-analyse, second guess ourselves and tie ourselves up in knots. Clarity gives way to noise, and the ability to think on our feet, something we rely on in high-stakes moments, begins to fade.
So, what actually helps us perform at our best when the pressure is on?
Some of the most effective ways to improve performance under pressure come from the world of coaching. These are not abstract concepts, but practical skills that enable leaders to remain clear, focused and effective across different scenarios, even when the stakes are high.
At their core, coaching skills are human skills, and it is these skills that shape how we perform when the pressure is on.
How you show up
Fundamentally, performing well under pressure starts with how you show up. Before any technique or tool, it is about the mindset you bring and the intention you set as you enter the room. Too often, we arrive already caught in the pressure, focused on outcomes, expectations or what might go wrong. That internal noise shapes how we engage before the conversation has even begun.
