Spread of avian influenza in US cows 'not being tracked'

Dependence on individual dairy farmers to help track the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza ((H5N1) is leaving the US federal government without the data necessary to understand and slow the spread of the virus in that country.

Agriculture and public health officials told online news website Politico that the government's biggest challenge was that the more the virus spreads among dairy cows, the more opportunity it has to mutate and the easier it will become for it to spread to more people.
The number of documented infected dairy herds has risen rapidly in recent weeks, with initial infections in cows confirmed in several states.
