The world offers many remarkable locations for riding adventures. One of the more unusual, and dramatic, is Greenland. Dr Mac has a look at the island’s breathtaking scenery and its tough, well-adapted horse breed

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is an independent territory that was originally part of Norway, but is now part of Denmark. This icy northern land was referred to as ultima Thule (‘farthest Thule’) after the Greco-Roman legend of the most northernly region of the known world. Allegedly, it was first called Greenland by a Viking named Eric the Red, who landed there around 983; he hoped that the word ‘green’ would lure more settlers over for him to govern.

So much for the history. What will interest readers of this column far more are the riding adventures and stunning beauty in Southern Greenland, and these are quite extraordinary!
