Dear Prof McCrindle, Which are the most dangerous diseases in Boer goats in spring? We live in Gauteng and have a smallholding with 250 goats.

The weaners are being fattened for sale, but I think they need to be vaccinated. Should those that have just kidded also be vaccinated? Which vaccines? Which parasites must be controlled?

Dear Goat Farmer,
In spring, the most dangerous viral diseases are bluetongue (which is carried by midges) and sometimes Rift Valley fever (which is carried by mosquitoes). Bacterial diseases include enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney) and tetanus. Vaccines are available to prevent all these diseases and should therefore be used now, according to directions.
