Achieving effective weed control in a carrot land
Farmer's Weekly|Farmer's Weekly 19 January 2024
There is a universally used herbicide for carrots that can be applied pre- and post-emergence to control weeds. This product is linuron. There are ways to get the most benefit from it,
Bill Kerr.
Achieving effective weed control in a carrot land

Linuron can be applied preemergence from sowing up to just before the carrot leaves emerge from the soil. Ideally, it should be applied just before emergence, but if one misjudges and the carrots start to emerge, one will have to wait for the post-emergence stage before application, which does not work as well.

Also, if one waits for the ideal stage and rain prevents one from getting into the land in time, you lose out as well. The safest option is usually to apply linuron three days from irrigation.

The post-emergence stage is when the carrots are at the four-leaf stage. This means two dicotyledonous leaves and two true leaves.

Many growers assume that it means two true leaves, which is incorrect, and applying linuron at that stage allows some weeds to develop to the point where they need higher rates of product to control them.
