Green Airports: A Work In Progress
Cruising Heights
|June 2025
Globally, there is a growing emphasis on achieving net-zero emissions, as evidenced by initiatives like the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) introduced by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
-
CORSIA aims to stabilise international aviation CO₂ emissions at 2020 levels by requiring airlines to offset emissions exceeding 85 per cent of 2019 levels through the purchase of eligible carbon credits.
Complementing this, the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program by Airports Council International (ACI) provides a structured framework for airports to manage and reduce their carbon footprints. The program offers six levels of accreditation, from Level 1 [Mapping] to Level 5 (Transformation], recognising airports' efforts in carbon management and reduction. Airports in countries like the Netherlands, India, Singapore, and the United States are leading this green revolution by investing in renewable energy, LEED-certified terminal designs and environmentally responsible practices such as implementing efficient waste management systems, conserving water, and promoting green infrastructure and transportation.
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is often cited as a green airport success story. It became the first US airport to achieve airport-wide LEED Platinum certification and now operates on 100 per cent renewable electricity. It has implemented comprehensive energy efficiency, water conservation, and zero-waste initiatives including an automated AirTrain system that significantly reduces ground transportation emissions.
