Embracing neurodivergence architecture and WELL Building Standards to shaping healthier spaces

CAN A BUILDING BOOST YOUR MOOD?

As the design industry increasingly prioritises occupant well-being, architects, interior designers, and fit-out contractors are exploring science-backed approaches that create spaces conducive to both mental and physical health. Here, we explore how professionals can deliver innovative, wellness-focused environments that enhance human performance and comfort by drawing from neuroarchitecture, neuroaesthetics, neurodiversity and the WELL Building Standard.

Understanding the science

The emerging field of neuroarchitecture investigates how built environments influence cognitive processes, emotional well-being, and physiological responses. Unlike traditional architecture, which emphasises function and aesthetics, neuroarchitecture begins with the nervous system and its intricate responses to stimuli such as light, sound and spatial arrangement.

“Neuroarchitecture examines the relationship between built environments and our brains,” explains Ana Mombiedro, Neuroarchitect in residence at Kidzink and Koda. “It’s asking how spaces affect cognition, emotion, and behaviour at the neurological level.”

"The mistake we make is that we believe that every project has an answer, and that mental health is like a solution you can just paint a brush over and everything else is fine.'

Research underscores the impact of environmental conditions on stress, focus, and creativity. Natural light, for example, can regulate circadian rhythms, improve mood and boost cognitive performance. He adds: “Educational spaces benefit from controlled natural light that creates vibrant environments without overwhelming sensitive systems.”
