Bio Spectrum
|January 2026
Karnataka stands at the forefront of India’s biosciences industry, supported by progressive policies, a dynamic innovation ecosystem, and strong collaboration between industry and academia.
-
With advanced research capabilities, sustained global investments, and a vibrant startup environment, the state has consistently set new standards, earning it the Best Performing State Award 2025 in biosciences from BioSpectrum India.
Karnataka has emerged as one of India’s most advanced and globally connected bioscience ecosystems, driven by long-term policy vision, strong scientific institutions, innovation-led entrepreneurship, and a diversified industrial base. Over the past decade, the state has systematically built an environment that integrates research, startups, manufacturing, and global markets, positioning Karnataka as India’s biotechnology capital and a leading life sciences hub in Asia.
Bioeconomy Growth and Economic Contribution
At the core of Karnataka's bioscience leadership is the scale and consistency of its bioeconomy growth. The state's bioeconomy expanded from $22 billion in 2021 to $31 billion in 2023, reflecting a 41 per cent growth in just two years. This momentum continued into 2024, with the bioeconomy reaching approximately $32.4 billion. Karnataka now contributes nearly 21 per cent of India’s total bioeconomy, making it one of the most significant drivers of national bioscience growth.
This expansion spans multiple verticals, including biopharma, bioindustrial applications, bioagriculture, and bioservices, underscoring the resilience and diversity of the state's bioscience ecosystem.
