In converation with BW Businessworld’s Tarannum Manjul; Vidya Yeravdekar, Pro Chancellor of Symbiosis International University, reflects on Symbiosis’ global journey, India's rising status in international education, and her vision of inclusive, values-driven leadership in higher education

“INCLUSIVITY IS A RESPONSIBILITY, NOT A STRATEGY”

Symbiosis has grown from a single institution to a large multi-disciplinary university with a global presence. What has been your guiding vision behind this transformation?

Our vision is inspired by our founder, S.B. Mujumdar's belief in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—“the world is one family.” Since 1971, Symbiosis has evolved from supporting international students into a globally respected, multi-disciplinary university. For over 50 years, we've championed holistic, future-ready education rooted in Indian values, with a focus on innovation, excellence, and global collaboration.

As a not-for-profit institution, we believe education should transcend borders. Our international presence fosters diverse, inclusive learning environments that nurture responsible global citizens—students who lead with values in a connected world.

Symbiosis has built a strong brand among international students as well. How do you see India’s position as a global education hub evolving?
