Can AI Help Build a Secure Food System?
AgroSpectrum
|AgroSpectrum India Feb 2024
The incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (Al) in food production is likely to spark a debate about ethics and governance across the entire supply chain.
-
Whether applied in autonomous agricultural machinery, to reduce food waste, or establish food standards, Al's role in the process demands consideration. With more than 50 per cent of the population engaged in agriculture, which accounts for over 18 per cent of India's GDP, there is a compelling argument to be made for leveraging AI to achieve improved outcomes. THEUNS KOTZE, Managing Director, Assurance IMETA (India, Middle East, Turkey and Africa), British Standards Institution (BSI)
The United Nations predicts a 60 per cent increase in global food demand by 2050 to sustain our growing population. With agriculture contributing to around a quarter of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, feeding the world in a way that is safe, nutritious and sustainable, is one of the central and most complex societal challenges we face today. Can AI be part of the solution for food security? Can farmers and manufacturers collaborate to help make the food we eat safer, healthier, and better for people and the planet? And if so, how can we build trust in a food and farming system where AI plays a pivotal role?

Trump's Tariff and its Impact on Shrimp industry of India
The recent decision by US President Donald Trump to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Indian exports has dealt a substantial blow to India's seafood sector, with shrimp exports bearing the maximum brunt of the impact. The total duty on Indian shrimp exports to the US has risen to 58.26 per cent, including a 50 per cent reciprocal tariff (which includes 25 per cent of penal tariff imposed on India for Russian crude imports), 5.77 per cent countervailing duty, and 2.49 per cent anti-dumping duty. Hence this, almost 59 per cent tariff, is going to have severe economic repercussions across multiple dimensions of India's fast-growing Shrimp industry.
