America's Cup Saudi controversy

The announcement gives credence to the rumours that Saudi Arabia was originally in the running to be host venue for the America’s Cup itself, which were circulating before Barcelona was confirmed in March last year. At the time many Cup fans raised wide ranging concerns about the venue, varying from the probability of light winds to Saudi Arabia’s record on human rights and environmental issues.

It has been confirmed that Jeddah, a major city on the Red Sea and home to the F1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, will host the second Preliminary event with six teams (Defenders Emirates Team New Zealand and five challengers) racing in AC40s.
