50 BEST CARS YOU DON'T HAVE TO PLUG IN

What Car? UK

|

January 2026

With filling stations everywhere, ever-improving efficiency and a price advantage over most plug-in rivals, petrol, diesel and conventional hybrid cars still have much in their favour. Here are our favourites

50 Dacia Jogger

Our pick 1.0 TCe 110 Expression

List price £20,270

Best price £20,270

Engine 3cyl, 999cc, turbo, petrol

Gearbox 6-spd manual 0-62mph 11.2sec

Top speed 114mph

Fuel economy 47.9mpg

CO2 132g/km

imageWANT A LOT of seats for not a lot of money? Look no further than the Dacia Jogger. It is, quite simply, the cheapest new seven-seater you can buy in the UK - but in typical Dacia fashion, there's more to this car than a low price tag. This is an MPV with genuine seven-seat usability, meaning even adults can fit in the third row. On top of that, it handles tidily and - even in entry-level Expression trim - it’s generously equipped, with such niceties as keyless entry and a rear-view camera. We'd stick with the 1.0-litre petrol engine instead of the pricey hybrid alternative.

The Jogger’s biggest compromise is its poor Euro NCAP safety rating.

49 Toyota Yaris Cross

Our pick 1.5 Hybrid 116 Design List price £28,260 Best price £28,260 Engine 3cyl, 1490cc, petrol, plus electric motor Gearbox CVT automatic 0-62mph 11.2sec Top speed 105mph Fuel economy 62.7mpg CO2 103g/km

THE TOYOTA YARIS Cross beats every other car in this list in one area: real-world fuel economy. No other car has ever proven more efficient in our tests, in which this hybrid-powered small SUV returned an astonishing average of 60.1mpg. That's for the less powerful of the two engine choices - and it’s the one we'd recommend.

We'd also go for mid-spec Design trim; it brings a bigger infotainment screen than the entry-level Icon, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility. Every Yaris Cross, though, offers smooth driving manners and a warranty that extends to 10 years if you keep it serviced by Toyota.
