MAKE YOUR BED MORE COMFORTABLE

Summer 2025

Whether you've a make-up, fixed or rock-and-roll bed, there are steps you can take to help get a better night's sleep, says Peter Baber

MAKE YOUR BED MORE COMFORTABLE

We all love the freedom that getting into a motorhome and driving off gives you. But let’s face it, sometimes, just sometimes, do you find that your sleeping arrangements might be less than you desired? We are, of course, talking about the bed in your ’van. It’s great that you have one, and it’s terribly clever how it’s been designed to fit in the vehicle, but it’s just not that comfortable. So what can you do?

MATTRESS MATTERS

The first thing to consider is the surface that you sleep on. If your motorhome comes with a fixed bed, and it is several years old, chances are your mattress could be well past its use by date. Many campervan mattresses, especially older ones, are made of relatively thin foam that does not last very long.

imageTell-tale signs that it is coming to the end of its useful life could be sagging or appearing lumpy, or if you find you are waking up with aching limbs.

It might be possible simply to change your current mattress for one that is made of superior foam, including memory foam, or better still a hybrid.

Of course, it might not be possible to replace the ‘mattress’ housed in your motorhome because it is made up out of the sofas that you either fold or piece together. Although it is worth pointing out here that there are some campervans on the market that have mattresses completely separate of any rock'n'roll mechanism, the VW Caddy California and the Panama P12 both being good examples.
