Pebble awaits for LSR icon

THE SUNBEAM 1000HP, the first car to achieve a Land Speed Record of 200mph, has added a prestigious new date to its itinerary when it heads to the USA to mark the centenary of its finest hour by reenacting it on Daytona Beach. Known as 'The Slug', the Sunbeam – currently being restored to run again, one of its two 22.4-litre Matabele V12 aero engines having been fired up for the first time in decades at Beaulieu's International Autojumble in September – is also to take centre stage in a special class at next year's Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance.

The appearance puts pressure on the National Motor Museum's small team to finish its restoration (three years so far), which will return Henry Segrave's British engineering icon to Florida in 2027, marking 100 years since it set a new world best of 203.792mph on 29 March
