In the high-stakes SUV of the Year arena, the Sportage's low-key refresh wasn't enough. Its subtle updates didn't stand out next to newer, truly innovative vehicles. Others fared better against our six criteria, yet everyone agreed the updated Sportage remains a great compact SUV for the real world. The restyling somewhat dilutes the unconventional look that helped the Sportage reach the finals during its 2023 SUV of the Year debut. In the cabin, a larger standard touchscreen runs a new operating system, yet the dashboard around it also tones down visual interest compared to before. Unchanged is how high-quality and practical the cabin is. Senior editor Aaron Gold praised the “great center console storage with useful hideaway cupholders” and the “second grab handle located forward on the front door panels, so short people like me can easily close the door.”

Are pickups becoming caricatures of their former selves? They seem to grow larger and heavier with each successive redesign to the point where you need staircase tailgates just to load them. Swimming against this tsunami is the wee Ford Maverick, a pickup that allows normal-sized human adults to reach in over the side rail and grab items off the bed floor without even standing on tippy-toes. The climb into the bed is manageable without steps, and many tailgate partiers may find their feet resting on the ground. Revolutionary.
