Tight lines in the Magaliesberg

With a whopping seven campsites, four dams teeming with fish and plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained, Zelpy is a top-notch camping destination.

On arrival just 8 km outside Magaliesburg, you’ll be welcomed by the friendly Tricia Swanepoel at reception, where she’ll help you with the formalities. Regulars (The resort was known as Eastco Magalies until a few years ago. – Ed) usually request their preferred spot when booking. If it’s your first visit, Tricia will first ascertain whether you’re here with a tent or caravan, and how close you want to be to the water before assigning you a stand.

Once you’ve set up camp and taken a stroll around the resort, it quickly becomes clear that this is an angler’s paradise. Three of the four dams are near the main camp and packed with fish. Fishing rods are lined up along the banks, their taut lines a sure sign of action, while bite alarms beep one after another.

imageYou’ll also spot plenty of furry companions, as small dogs are welcome to camp here. Just check with the resort beforehand, as only knee-high or smaller dogs are allowed. Some campers even fence off their site to keep their pups from wandering off on solo adventures.

But it’s not just anglers who will feel at home here – there’s more than enough to do for everyone. The resort is split into two sections: the main camp, which houses reception, and the game reserve. The main camp is where you’ll find all the usual amenities – swimming pools, a slide, kids’ play areas, a camp shop and a restaurant.

They don't know what we know

Despite technological advances, and the unrealistic notion held by some that camping is merely a way to show off, the heart of the lifestyle should remain unchanged, says Neels van Heerden.
