MONDAY - Away for a few days with the Steering Committee in Stockholm, a holiday favourite. So much to enjoy in Sweden (steam ferries!) but one regret is a relative lack of city automotive interest; we car people don't realise how much fascinating stuff we have in over-regulated London.

Just on the way to the airport, we spotted what looked like a habitual commuter in a Hillman Minx (a 1959 Series 3, I'd estimate) and a bloke going the other way in an unmolested 1932 Ford Coupé. Both a feast for the eyes.

However, things suddenly changed today. As I waited in a street corner while She shopped for hair products in a department store, a bloke in a 1960s Volvo Amazon broke down right in front of me - and while he waited glumly for help, he accepted commiserations from another passing commuter in a red Citroën 2CV.

Amazing what a lift it gave me. Made me think one should often drive about in something modest but surprising, just for the edification of onlookers like you and me.
