Japan Mobility Show returned to the Island nation after five years. Anagh Bhaskar sums up the headliners
The Tokyo Motor Show made a comeback after five years since the 2021 edition was cancelled due to the pandemic. Rebranded as the Japan Mobility Show, the exposition serves as the prime showcase of cars, motorcycles and other forms of mobility solutions for Japanese automakers. Suzuki showcased a number of new products, of which the Swift concept and the eVX are of prominence for India as these are headed to our shores in the next couple of years. Nissan, Toyota, Honda and Lexus headlined their displays with a number of electric concept vehicles including SUVs and sportscars. Kawasaki debuted its production ready Ninja 7 Hybrid - the world's first mass market strong hybrid motorcycle while Yamaha showcased a number of two and three-wheeled mobility solutions.
SUZUKI SWIFT
Suzuki publicly unveiled the all-new fourth-gen Swift hatch which is likely to be launched in India sometime next year. While the Japanese automaker has called this a concept car, it is nearly in production spec as showcased. While the overall look follows the current-gen car, almost every bit externally is different. The nose is flat, flanked by sharper headlamps with L-shaped DRLs. The grille is new and rounded while the lower bumper is sportier. While in profile the car looks similar to the older one, the doors are new. The rear has been reprofiled as well and looks more angular than before. The taillamps feature a similar shape, but come with redone internals and LED lighting. The cabin isn't much different, and shares a number of bits with the Baleno/Fronx such as the infotainment display, steering and the climate control switches. The Swift on showcase also gets a hybrid powertrain, but this is unlikely to make it to India.
