Spark of change: The Imperative Role Of Real Estate In India's EV Infrastructure

|February 2024
India is undergoing a significant transformation with the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs). This dynamic shift promises environmental benefits, reduced carbon emissions, and significant economic viability, writes Anshuman Magazine, Chairman & CEO India, South-East Asia, Middle East & Africa, CBRE.
The realisation of India’s sustainable future hinges on developing and optimum utilisation of a robust EV charging infrastructure. The surge in EV adoption is propelled by increasing environmental awareness, government incentives, and rapid advancements in battery technology. As of 2023, India reached a remarkable milestone, surpassing one million EV sales in under nine months, compared to a full year in 2022. Projections even suggest that annual EV sales could reach a staggering 10 million by 2030, with an expected total of 40 to 50 million EVs navigating Indian roads. The acceleration and sustenance of this adoption will depend heavily on a well-equipped EV charging ecosystem. A comprehensive, nationwide charging network is essential to address drivers’ concerns about range anxiety, a significant obstacle to EV adoption.
Prominence of charging infrastructure
The widespread adoption of eco-friendly EVs hinges on accessible and convenient charging stations. Retrofitting EV charging stations across commercial and residential real estate assets is imperative to aid this rapid uptake being witnessed for EVs. An expansion of charging infrastructure across residential complexes, commercial spaces, and public parking facilities, alongside navigating regional electrical capacity and zoning regulations, is currently being undertaken.
