They are a rugged breed, with farm dog and sled dog genes in them. The Chinook is a dependable guy, both outdoors and indoors, perfect on your expeditions and to cuddle with by the fireplace. He’s a “warm wind” on a cold winter’s night – that’s what the name Chinook means in Native American language.

ORIGIN: The name of the breed actually came about after the first pup of a litter between a Husky and a farm dog was named Chinook. Arthur Walden bred this new line of canines – after his return from his travels to Alaska where he worked with sled dogs – in 1917 on his New Hampshire farm and since then the breed has always been on the brink of near extinction. However, once Admiral Byrd signed on the original Chinook and his descendants for his famed expedition to the South Pole, the breed enjoyed some time in the limelight.
