We receive remarkable images on a regular basis, but are not always able to find space for them in our pages.

So because we would like to share them with you, we have displayed some of the best photographs we have received.
Canon South Africa has kindly sponsored a PowerShot SX420 IS camera, valued at R5000, for the image that the magazine's staff voted as the most striking in this issue. The winner in this issue is Kevin Tutty.
I took this image of a juvenile Bateleur while we were on a game drive in the Lower Sabie area of the Kruger National Park. The bird's attention was drawn to a bottle that someone had unfortunately thrown from their car. When we stopped, the bird noticed its own reflection in our wheel covers and, as it walked up to us for a closer look, I managed to take a few photographs.

We went to Chintsa East on the Wild Coast for the December holidays. I had heard that the Knysna Woodpecker had been seen there and as that was a bird high on my to-see list, I went in search of it.

They are highly productive ecosystems that are characterised by diverse and abundant food sources and they provide essential feeding, breeding, migratory and resting habitat for numerous species. iSimangaliso Wetland Park, for example, supports more than 500 bird species.

Is NECHISAR NIGHTJAR a hybrid?
Vernon Head's award-winning book The Search for the Rarest Bird in the World brought widespread attention to the curious case of the Nechisar Nightjar. In 1992, a dead nightjar was found on a dirt road in Nechisar National Park, southern Ethiopia. A wing was collected and the bird was later described as a new species based on its distinctive large white wing patch. Its scientific name, Caprimulgus solala, attests to the fact that it is known only from a single wing.
