Bette Midler and Martin von Haselberg have managed to achieve one of the rarest things in Hollywood – a long-lasting marriage. But their chances didn’t look good when they spontaneously eloped to Las Vegas in 1984 – just six weeks after they met!

“I asked him,” says Bette of the spur-ofthe moment decision. “My wedding was two people – my husband and me – and, of course, the Elvis impersonator that married us.”

But while they’ve managed to beat the odds, Bette says their 37-year union hasn’t always been blissful.

“We used to fight bitterly,” admits the 75-year-old Golden Globe winner, who credits the arrival of their only child Sophie in 1986 for forcing them to fix their relationship issues.
