Trends Influencing Indian Automotive Industry

While the industry has been stressing on its long-standing demand for a cut in GST rates on automobiles, we take a closer look at the trends that have influenced this slowdown as well as those that will play a larger role over the near term. Auto Tech Review caught up with Rajeev Singh, Partner, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP to understand about the downturn that has dented automotive sales in a big way.

TRACING THE SLOWDOWN

The prevailing domestic slowdown is not a result of any recent developments and has been building up over a period of time, triggering the situation the auto industry is currently facing. According to various industry experts, the factors that have been influencing the slowdown have not only been building up over the years but are also multi-dimensional in nature.

One of the dimensions is that of automotive dealers, who are an important stakeholder in the entire ecosystem. Over the last three to four years, the dealer community has been hit every year – it all began with demonetisation that impacted the way dealers dealt with the market. Tax reforms such as GST also impacted the increase in working capital requirements of the dealers. Further, the cash crunch from non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) is also impacting automotive dealers. In fact, the dealer community has been impacted year-on-year. Simultaneously, they have also been striving to make course corrections. As opposed to the previous amount of inventory being held by dealers before the arrival of the slowdown, dealers are now trying to hold lesser stock. This also explains why wholesale numbers have taken a hit, as someone in the value chain is shrinking their inventory holding.

Sound Generation For Enhanced Road Safety

The silent nature of the electric powertrain means that other road users miss the familiar acoustic cues that warn them of an approaching vehicle. To remedy this situation, Harman is working on various noise management solutions.

OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE SAFETY CONTRIBUTION OF TODAY'S AUTOMOTIVE HEADLAMPS

Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.

FUNCTIONAL SAFETY STANDARDS TOP PRIORITY FOR FUTURE AUTOMOTIVE DEPLOYMENT

Increasing levels of electronic content in vehicles result in a large amount of software that is required to run the scenes behind the mechanical aspects of a vehicle. Electronic systems in automobiles are part of every section, from the powertrain to comfort and convenience systems as well as all types of safety equipment. This makes electronics and the software running these systems a critical part of the equation for future mobility solutions. In addition, putting standards in place to measure methods of developing, testing and functioning of such electronic systems also becomes highly relevant.
