For any rider to miss a significant amount of racing time, finding the physical and mental skills to reach the top level of the sport once again may be tricky. But if anyone can, Tom Dumoulin may be just that man.
He may not have made the start line of the Tour de France last year, but 2018 was one of the most epic Grand Tour campaigns seen in the recent history of the sport – despite not standing on the top step of the podium. Finishing second in both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France to Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas respectively was impressive, and if a couple of key stages went his way it could have seen the Dutchman pulling off a Grand Tour double for the ages.
