The letters page of old issues are often a treasure trove of information, offering real insight into the topics that readers were passionate (or incensed) about at the time. The sort of things that would never make it into a race report or news story. For example, an R C Potter writes… ‘Open time trials are generally well marshaled, but it’s rare for the finish to be distinctly marked. While local riders know which windscreen the timekeeper is sitting behind, the visiting competitor is faced with a line of vehicles parked on the verge and groups of spectators. Surely promoters could provide a chequered flag.’
