WITH it still barely feeling like the start of spring at home, we had a trip booked for three nights at Lac de Premiere, in northern France.
For the first time in years, I was to have 72 hours of my own fishing in front of me!
Only two hours’ drive from Calais, with stunning surroundings, Premiere is run by Keith Gladden and his lovely family.
My other half, Hollie, had parents’ evening at work on the evening we were due to leave, keeping me on childcare, so Youngy and Ginge held on for me. Our van was loaded, and we made our way to Folkestone.
Driving through the night, we arrived at the lake at 2.30am, so we threw our brollies up and got our heads down to get started, first thing in the morning.
The lake had nine anglers on all week, with only two fish coming out, so it was going to be a hard one.
Baiting up
I barrowed all my gear around to peg 16 and started setting up camp. I took my time, having a good lead around with my marker rod and just a lead, and settled on two areas. One was 128 yards, the other at 160 yards.
The shorter spot was going to be a baited area, and with the lake fishing slow and the water still cold, I made sure that it was made up of a load of small food items – hemp, 10 mm Isofruit and Cell, with the old faithful sweetcorn, and a tiny bit of Cell pellets, to soak all the flavours in and help hold the mix together.

Making Short Work Of Specimen Chub
