This has been a burning question in everyone’s minds these past few years. With manufacturers such as sony and panasonic having shifted to the mirrorless system years ahead of others and canon and nikon slowly catching up, dslrs seem to have a bleek future in the years to come. In this article we discuss what lies ahead for the industry changing digital single lens reflex cameras and what the positives and negatives are to shifting to mirrorless systems.

History of DSLRs

While DSLRs gained popularity commercially at a much later stage, the technology was developed years back. in 1969 Willards. Boyle and George. Smith successfully created the imaging technology using a digital sensor which was called CCD or charge-coupled device sensor. In 1975, a Kodak company engineer developed the first digital still camera which also used a CCD sensor. Soon sony followed the trend and built the Sony Mavica. Nikon also followed suit and so did canon in the years to come. A similar trend can be noticed in the mirrorless segment as well and if history does repeat itself, there is a good chance that mirrorless cameras will be the way forward for the industry. The DSLRs provided certain features that became indispensable for the then film photographers. These features included live preview, memory cards which could carry more photographs, non-requirement of changing film rolls on a shoot and many more. These battery-powered wonders were an extremely attractive proposition for photographers.
