A Sea Of Devotees In Ayodhya As Ram Temple Opens Doors

Multitudes of people swarmed the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on Tuesday, rushing to pay obeisance to the 51-inch black stone idol of Ram Lalla that was consecrated a day ago, as queues spilled onto nearly every street in the temple town and caught local authorities off-guard.

The crowds prompted top state government officials and senior police personnel to chalk out quick-fire plans to streamline the chaos, even as Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath flew to Ayodhya to assess the situation.
The Uttar Pradesh Police's director general (law and order) Prashant Kumar and principal home secretary Sanjay Prasad, camped inside the sanctum sanctorum for around five hours and kept the crowd inside the temple moving. Around 500,000 people visited the Ram Temple, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the "pran pratishtha" ceremony at the sprawling temple, according to officials.
"It's a joyous occasion and we are ready to wait and see the magical face of Ram Lalla," one of the devotees said. The grand opening of the temple, built of pink sandstone, white marble and granite, turned the page on one of India's most fractious disputes, and is likely to play a key role ahead of the general elections this year.
