Modi rues lack of reforms in security apparatus post-1947

AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said there was a need for reforms in the internal security apparatus after Independence, but India lagged behind in this area.

He said common people's perception of security personnel has undergone a change in recent times and today they are being looked at with assurance of help.

"After Independence, there was a need for reforms, but unfortunately sufficient work was not done in this direction and we lagged behind," the PM said addressing the first convocation of Rashtriya Raksha University during the second day of his two-day visit to the home state.

“A perception was developed that we have to be careful of the uniformed personnel. But it has transformed now. When people see uniformed personnel now, they get the assurance of help.”

He cited the humane work carried out by police such as providing food and medicine to the people during the pandemic.
