“PLAY-OFFS? Let’s get to 51 points first!” exclaimed Bromley boss Neil Smith.

It was a typical response from the battle-hardened former centre-back, whose Ravens have been happy to fly under the radar this season in the National League.

Smith’s side are the division’s top scorers and sat just one point off the final play-off place in eighth before yesterday’s clash against Macclesfield – a position they’ve hovered around all season.

After a tenth-place finish last season, the installation of a 3G pitch has allowed them to kick on further and boost their community status in Kent.

Yet Smith, known for his fearless performances as a player at Gillingham and Woking, remains grounded.

“At the beginning of the season, I think people had us in the bottom five, if I’m honest,” he said, having taken over as manager in 2016 after a successful spell as interim boss.
