THE GAFFER’S GREATEST GAFFER WITH JERRY GILLWITH

JOHN IS KING OF THE ONE-LINERS!

WHO inspires the inspirations in the ever-changing world of football? Which traits stand the test of time?

In the second of our new series, we ask some of NonLeague’s top bosses to name the gaffers who made the biggest impact on their playing days.

This week, we talk to Bath City manager Jerry Gill, the ex-Birmingham City and Cheltenham Town full-back who is approaching his third anniversary in charge at Twerton Park.

Before making it as a professional, his name was made in his native West Country with Bath and Yeovil Town before Trevor Francis swooped to take him to St Andrew’s.

But it would be his time at Cheltenham, under John Ward, where he enjoyed play-off glory in Cardiff in 2006 that would prove the biggest influence on his manner in the dugout.

WHO WAS YOUR GREATEST GAFFER AND WHY?

There were many but I’d have to say John Ward. I got to Cheltenham at the age of 32 after tearing my cruciate at Northampton and I have always said the more I manage, the more I realise what I learned from the way John manages people.

There are lots of coaches and managers out there but that side of it is such a strong tool to have and that was his thing.

He knew the game tactically but the key was how he managed and made time for the players who were not playing as much as those who were.

He is a great guy and I still see him as a mentor now. If I need to discuss something or I have something on my mind – it might not be every week or every month – I know he is always there to give his honest advice.

WHAT IS YOUR TOP MEMORY OF PLAYING FOR JOHN?
